One down.. One to go...

Poodle skirts that is.. except they're really not poodle skirts. They are actually called circle skirts on the pattern.. Sure, there is a template for a poodle, but I am doing a cute little purse on each of them. M (age 5) has been telling her friends she is going to be a 50's girl for Halloween - which is correct I suppose. This afternoon while I was sewing, J (age 9)was doing some sort of dance - I tried to explain The Swing to her, but without actually getting up to show her (like "I" can dance!) Then, this evening while at our neighbors sharing dessert, she told her friend " I can do The Swing!" ... O Brother.. (I didn't do such a great job of explaining it.)

Just want to also say thanks to Nutz for welcoming me to Blogland! And to everyone who has said hello! I read lots of blogs, just never had the opportunity to post! So I'll try to comment a little more!

Hey, I wore a costume with a poodle skirt a few years ago. And I know how to swing. My mom taught me. I'm a pro at the Lindy. We used to dance around to her old '40s vintage 78s when I was 5 or 6. I'd stand on her toes as she danced and then she'd swing me up and through her legs. It was fun!

That sounds like so much fun Geg! I don't think I've ever worn a poodle skirt! It's pretty simple to make them however- I'm hoping to get the other one done today!

(thanks for visiting! I'd visit your blog, but I don't know where it is?)

Are you making a blouse with their initials on it, like in Laverne and Shirley?

My sister had a poodle skirt for one of her dance outfits (she was in a dancing class that put on very elaborate recitals) and I loved to wear it. I also loved to wear her "In the Navy" costume (a blue satiny sailor themed leotard). One day I put it on & went outside to blow bubbles. Turns out that bubbles and blue satin don't mix.

Puffy, I'm not going that far... One of the neighbor girls asked if I'd make her a button down shirt of some particular material.. And.. I told her I don't even make button down shirts for my OWN kids, let alone for the neighbor! LOL! No, I do like to sew, and have done some for their family.. but I despise buttonholes!

LOL at Kim's bubbles & Satin! We had a similar bridesmaid dress for J that got stained with bubbles..

Feel free to visit, mom. I must warn you, however, it is most definitely not PG-13. LOL!

Halloween and sewing. Hmmmm.

My kid designed her own costume, but of course, we did not finish it in time for her to use it tonight at the church youth party. She did finish the hat and did a nice job putting the rest of her "costume" together. She went as a fantasy character that she made up, so no one will recognize who she is supposed to be anyway. I guess that's the beauty of it.

In the process of mak..., er, helping her make her costume, I discovered so many more projects that are waiting for me to finish.

You are so darned ambitious! I always wanted to make costumes, but the kids always picked out store bought ones. I guess it was good because I never had the time.

Oh... and you're welcome! Glad to be the one to welcome you!

I'll have to get the girls in a picture.. I made J's much too big! She is 9, and is not so thin.. but I didn't have her close while I was sewing..

I don't think I EVER wore a store bought costume.. did they have those 30 years ago??

30 years ago, we had those plastic costumes (like an art smock) that tied in the back. Pair that with a plastic mask with eyeholes and viola! Horrible costume! ;-)
